Is your data safe on the internet?

I have amassed a lot of data about our family history (papers, photos etc.), which I keep in a folder on my computer. This folder is subdivided into 37 sub-folders, some of which also have sub-folders. It amounts to about 1GB of data so far. I would like to share this data with other family members in various parts of the world – safely, given its personal nature. I was going to copy the folders onto a CD and post it, but if a CD got lost, anyone could easily access the data.
Options I have considered:
1. Encrypting the data, but I'm not sure how to do this.
2. Using pen drives which I believe can be password protected. But they are a bit expensive.
3. Uploading the data to something like SkyDrive or Drop Box. The problem is the limits on the amount of data and folders.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

-David

This is a problem everyone is facing today, and the problem will increase in the times to come. According to Gartner research, the average data storage per household will grow 7x from 464GB in 2011 to 3,300GB in 2016. With that said and with the modern innovations converting everything digital, security of an individual’s data will be a concern for the future.
A person like David is still looking for some answers to securely keep and share his valuable memories and information online. The existing solutions like skydrive, dropbox etc. provide a fair basis to save information online but this comes with a cap on the limited space and the cost that a person has to incur to get totally secured place on the internet.
ShareBlu is trying to address the problem of sharing files over the internet securely, with its automatic encryption and password protection features for sharing files of any size.
